E-transfers have become a convenient way to handle club finances, making it easier than ever to manage payments. But unfortunately, wherever money goes, scammers often try to follow.
E-transfer fraud typically involves someone pretending to be a trusted contact—sometimes even posing as a fellow club member—and requesting payment via e-transfer. These scammers use sneaky tactics like “phishing” emails or messages and often gather details from publicly available sources like your club’s website or Facebook page. With just a bit of basic info, they can create messages that look surprisingly real.
But don’t worry—there are some simple steps your club can take to stay one step ahead:
Keep Member Emails Private: Avoid posting club members’ email addresses on the public parts of your website. Instead, keep that information secure in a members-only section.
Use a Contact Form: Make it easy for the public to reach out without giving away personal contact details. A “Contact Us” form on your website is a great option.
Check Your Club Directory Settings: Take a few minutes to review your privacy settings in the PROBUS Canada national Club Directory. We've created a handy guide called Updating the Club Directory—you’ll find it in the Key Documents section of the Club Reference Guide. We recommend switching all “Publish” settings in the Privacy section to “No” for added peace of mind.
Stay Informed: The Government of Canada has a helpful webpage explaining how e-transfer fraud works and how to protect yourself. Your bank likely offers similar advice—worth a quick look!
By staying informed and following these simple best practices, your club can keep financial transactions safe and secure.
